LED Epitaxial wafer and chip maker Epistar has licensed its LED filament patent to China-based LED lighting maker Leedarson Lighting for making LED filament style light bulbs. The patent is valid in Taiwan, China, the US, Europe and other countries, according to the company.
LED filament light bulbs are mainly used to replace A19/A60/A55 450-lumen decorative LED light bulbs and B35/F35 250-lumen LED candle lamps. There were an estimated 43 million LED filament light bulbs shipped globally in 2014 and shipments in 2015 are expected to increase to 60-70 million units, according to market watchers. In addition, prices for LED filament light bulbs have dropped due to decreases in LED chip and packaging prices. For example, ex-factory prices for an A19 450-lumen LED filament light bulb fell from about US$3 in 2014 to US$2 in the first half of 2015.
In addition to Epistar, Japan-based Ushio Lighting and Nichia as well as China-based Zhejiang Ledison Optoelectronics hold patents concerning LED filament technologies.
